How to Measure Your Windows for Blinds & Shades

Rough measurements help us prepare an estimate for your window coverings. Before anything is made, we complete a measurement check, so you can measure with confidence.

Before you start

  • Use a steel tape measure, not a cloth one
  • Measure each window separately, even if they look the same
  • Record measurements to the nearest ⅛″
  • Write width first, then height
  • Label each window by room and position

Inside or outside mount?

Inside mount fits within the window frame for a clean, built-in look. Outside mount covers the frame and some of the wall around it, which can help with light control or shallow frames. If you are unsure, measure both ways and we will advise.

Measuring for an inside mount

  • Measure the width inside the frame at the top, middle and bottom; note the smallest
  • Measure the height inside the frame at the left, centre and right; note the largest
  • Measure the depth of the frame
  • Note handles, cranks or locks that stick out

Measuring for an outside mount

  • Measure the width you want to cover, including any overlap past the frame
  • Measure the height from where the covering will mount to where it should end
  • Check there is flat wall space above the window to mount on
  • Note nearby obstacles such as vents, trim or switches
